Final double page spread

This is the final draft of my double page spread. I maintained the main colour scheme throughout of orange and tealy blue, so that the magazine is consistent and you can tell the through the theme what magazine it belongs too. With the images for this, I did not want it too look too overly posed to reflect the kind of artist I want the magazine to be reviewing, so that it links with my reader profile and target audience. I took the main image on the left hand side on the beach, and the smaller right hand images at the bottom in my back garden. The image above that was just in my house. The only one that is a posed image is the main one, I wanted the other ones to be casual and almost as though she was unaware that the pictures were being taken. I think they work well in contrasting with the formal layout of the page and formal text.

Final front cover

This is the final print screen of the front cover to my music magazine. I ended up making a lot of changes in comparison to my original draft.
I removed the grey gradient background I originally had and decided to keep it white, because of the outfit I had chosen my model to wear and the colour schemes of my fonts and font background blocks it made the overall page look too busy, so I decided to keep it plain white however I don't think it looks too plain due to the other images used and bright colours as well as the patterned coat. I also think that using plain white can look very sophisticated and is seen in music magazines often, including the likes of Rolling Stone and NME.
I added photographs onto my front cover which I was never sure about doing because I think it can make it look too much, however I think that it worked well. I used a picture of the model for 'Enzia Darko' that I originally planned to use on the contents page; some photographs that I took when I went to a previous festival (Lounge on The Farm 2010) under my summer festival guide cover line and I used a picture from my lomography 35mm film pictures that I used to create the album cover for The Pilots, however I used a different one so that the images were not seen as repetitive. I also added the font for The Cure, which I previously said why in my final contents page analysis.

Final Contents page

This is the final outcome of my contents page.
I added a feature of tour dates down the right hand side and to make it look more professional I used the correct fonts for each of the artists, which is something I think would be seen in a real magazine. I made another album cover for an artist 'Frank Beleni' using old pictures of my younger sibling because through analysis and research of other indie album covers I've noticed the reoccurance of old looking photographs of people who are not associated with the artist neccesarily, an example being Vampire Weekends - Contra and Vampire Weekends self titled name Vampire Weekend, where there are the pictures of a blonde woman and also one of a chandelier which are taken in a lomography style.
I also added a feature about the Turner Contempory Art Gallery in Margate, which I visited because it has a heavy feature on music from the 70s, 80s and even 90s. Also I stated in my reader profile that the kind of audience my magazine would be intended to attract would be someone who has not only an interest in music but in the arts and photography, so I thought this feature would be appropriate as a feature in the magazine. I included a picture of an istallation of home made T Shirts with slogans on that are representitive of the period of music.

MOCK UP OF DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

I decided to arrange my text in a different way and add colour to the font. I used the font 'Arial' and 'Arial Narrow' because I want to keep a sans serif theme as it looks more professional and matches the theme of my magazine. I carried on the colour of the teal blue and intend to carry the orange through as well, in order to make the theme consistent.

DRAFT OF MY CONTENTS PAGE

This is a draft of my contents page, which provides the idea of what stlye and theme I want. It's quite clean cut, with black, blue and orange font - which are the colours carried on from the front cover. I have listed all the features inside the magazine by using pictures of what would be on the feature, and I have made my main feature, my double page spread's, image the largest and in the centre, and I have used an image from the same shoot to provide fluency. I have labelled the images of the 'main features' with page numbers.
I do not want to include an editors letter in my magazine, as although this is conventional of other magazines, it does not appear as often in music magazines.
I have included a variety of fonts however my main two being Helvetica Narrow and Georgia, I have used the same fonts so that the magazine looks consistent.
For the style of my contents page, I got a lot of the inspiration from the NME contents page, as I really liked the way their layout was quite neat however still contained a lot of images and information.

IMAGES USED ON MY CONTENTS PAGE:

'ENZIA DARKO':
These are some of the images I took to use on my contents page as another artist who will be featured in my magazine. I took all of the photographs of my friend Emily in various locations because I wanted to do a little section of the contents page dedicated to this feature. In the end I decided to use the 2nd and 3rd picture along from the top row because I think that these depicted her being on 'tour' best. This is featured on the contents page and her name is 'Enzia Darko'.
 FESTIVAL PICTURES:
Because I wanted to also do a festival feature in my magazine, I used pictures that I had taken from a previous summer festival, as there were no upcoming ones to attend due to the time of year, and used these on my contents page. I used pictures from 'Lounge on The Farm' festival.

TEXT FOR DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD - INTERVIEW WITH JESSICA QUAIL

So Jessica, this is the second album from you that we have been long awaiting, how do the tracks from this album differ from your older material? Talk us through the songwriting and recording process and what makes this album different?

Well, my first album I spent years creating this sound and specific type of track that I wanted the album to be typical of, but with this album I had a lot less time to create such depth to all the sounds I was working with and I wanted to make something different, but still recognisable. So this one is really stripped back, I wanted to focus a lot more on the lyrics and the voice as opposed to the sound and instruments. For the old album, we would use lyrics that I had written years and years ago and try and turn them into a successful track by adding a wide variety of different beats or instruments on top of them, but with this album I spent nearly all the time just working on the lyrics and using my voice as the main instrument and trying to experiment really with what it was capable of.

You mentioned quite a lot there about your lyrics, is this album quite focused on personal sentiments? Will we be able to notice any general themes?

Yeah I think this album particually is very much focused around my own personal experiences and emotions that I have felt. There are quite a few re-occuring themes in the album and the main one being centered around a break up I went through not too long ago so yeah, I would definitely say there are some re-occuring themes in this album.

You’re on a collobaration record deal partnership with Moshi Moshi records and Island Records, who have signed the likes of Florence and The Machine, U2 Amy Winehouse and Drake. Does this add any pressure to you or do you think it motivates you?

Yes I am, and it definitely does add pressure! Whenever I was writing a track or recording it in the studio from this album I was constantly thinking to myself what if people don’t get it but you can’t think like that or you’ll never succeed, in this industry you have to take chances and just hope that you have people that will always support you in what you make and what you do.

So the first album off the track is called Revolution which was released a month back. Talk us through this particular track and the lyrics behind it?

I was thinking to myself about my generation and it’s pretty much just me asking you kow, what’s happening? There’s a whole load of madness that goes on today just as much as there was back in the sixties and seventies, but for some reason back then people felt they had a voice and that they could fight for what they believe is right, whereas what we do, is well we don’t really do much so it’s just me saying we have a voice, so let’s speak.

It’s been an absolute pleasure talking to you and we can’t wait to see you in action soon, when will you next be touring?

I will be touring early june, after the release of the album and I will be doing all over the UK hopefully and then over to Berlin, Paris and Amsterdam which are places that I love playing so I am really, really excited about that.
